Open Flirt Policy?

We talked about a listeners “open flirt policy” a few months ago and both Mike and I thought it was a mistake. It’s like the old saying goes, you play with fire and ya gonna get burned. We hadn’t heard from the couple in months until a few days ago. Apparently the open flirting had invited some unwanted attention towards the guy.

Here’s the backstory:

There is a fairly attractive woman at his job who likes attention and most of the men give it to her. The guy said kind things every now and again and didn’t really ward off any inappropriate comments from her. Welp things took a turn straight to All My Children (cue soap opera music) when the “office ho” (not my description) cornered the guy and planted a kiss on him.

The guy immediately felt guilty but didn’t know how to bring the situation up to his wife. He wrestled with it for days before finally coming clean. The wife’s response was anger (naturally) BUT how mad could she really get? They both openly flirted at work.

Days of arguing ensued and the couple agreed to rethink the policy along with blocking TOH (The Office Ho) from all social media sites. They agreed to play defense and have better communication in the relationship. The listener even said it IGNITED their desire for one another because they both realized how much their marriage meant to them and they never wanted to take it for granted.

When I read the story I immediately thought 1) I would have went down there and pulled a NICKI MINAJ (check VMA’s award speech) “what’s good …” 2) Went upside Mike Shelton’s head just because somehow it was is fault (and secretly I would wonder if more happened) 3) See number 1 but probably with little more aggression.

I’m happy the couple worked it out but it proves our point that flirting whether knowingly or unknowingly can lead to all types of ugly. This situation could have been a lot worse and even broken them up. I made a vow to check myself even harder in conversations and interactions with people just to make sure no one gets the wrong idea.

What do you think about an “open flirt policy”? What would you have done in the situation?
